The basic premise taken in developing the ideal solution for the iSeries/400 is that while many aspects of data collection are common to all applications, other important aspects are unique to each client. The Engine/View philosophy addresses this reality by sectioning off those aspects that are standard from those that are variable into separate libraries.

The standard foundation of the system is the Engine. The Engine library includes the database, inventory, history, stock location, inquiries, reports and system control files. Tried and true this portion of Viewpoint is feature-rich and provides most of the system's functionality.

The variable aspects of the system are the entry screens and seamless interface which are located in the View library. Using a disciplined methodology, these are generated individually to address the unique requirements of each client.
